If you ha ve read my prior posts I hate financially responsible decisions. Today is no different. This time I am stuck in my own head, and I need your help.
A few nights ago my Morgan left me stranded and my wife lent me her CX-5 for a week while she was traveling. I towed the Morgan on a flat bed at midnight, and I drove her car instead of the Jag for 3 of the 5 days. I realize I LOVE adaptive cruise control. I cannot emphasis this enough. The Morgan has made my love for the Jag dwindle, I a m obsessed with the 3 wheeler, and I waiver about the big kitty.

The r
easoning for my argument.
A
Morgan is 1200lbs, a trailer to tow the Morgan sits right at 900lbs, the towing capacity for the CX-5 is 2000lbs. I do no
t want to hurt her transmission by towing at the limit, and I have no idea what the tongue weight would be.

The flatbed ride gave me time to think things over too. If I had a truck with a trailer I would have and picked up the Morgan myself after a cab ride home. I could tow the Morgan to exotic places like the pacific coast highway where it could break down, and then tow it home after hitchhiking back to the truck.
I test drove a Tacoma, Tundra, Ridgeline, F150 Platinum, GMC Denali, & a Ram 1500. Hands down, the Ram wins with reclining rear seats, 4 corner air bags, adaptive CC to stop and go, more legroom, and all the seats are ventilated and heated. If you were in my position, would you deal with the occasional flat bed and keep the F-Type or buy a truck with all the bells and whistles?

As someone who’s had every one of his cars flatbedded to home and shops many times for various reasons
, that’s what AAA and Hagerty insurance is for. Keep the Jag.

I would turn the F Type (well it’s internals) into a truck.

My wife also has a CX5 and I have a base level F150. I rode in brand new top trim Tundra a couple weeks back and that for sure will be my next truck. The Jag is nice but it sounds like you need some utility.

K-roll brought up a good point of just getting unlimited towing on insurance.

There is no way hauling 2100 lbs will ever hurt the CX-5. The EU rated hauling capacity (braked) of the 194 hp 2.5 is 4400 lbs. I think Hammerheadfistpunch wrote a primer about the difference in EU and US load rating, but as long as you’re not planning outrageous speeds or inclines, you should be fine.

This is a good answer.

Trade the Jag and Morgan in on an Exocet and not have to worry about tow trucks anymore, and have cash left over.
![]() 10/07/2018 at 16:59 |

...why bother with an all-new one if it’s the same as an older one?

No way in hell.
Full answer: Maybe its because Im European, but there’s no way I would ever trade an F Type for any kind of truck. Having said that, it looks like you have 2 toy cars (the Morgan and the Jag). That does explain the potential choice for selling the Jag (and makes, in a way, more sense)....I still wouldnt do it though.

The interior was really nice. Comfort and finish level was top notch compared to my Ford

I’ve driven an Atom, a slingshot, and a t-rex. Nothing comes close to the Morgan, breaking down is part of it too.

Fair enough. Maybe get another one for when the first fails?

How old is your Ford, though? Tundra’s feeling pretty dated compared
to the new
Ram and 2015+ F-150

6 wheels bad, argument checks out.

2013. I like the new front end. My dad has a new Ram and boy is that thing a dog.

Simple answer is no. Mainly because the truck you are thinking about is more than you’ll ever need if all you need to do is occasionally tow the Morgan. It’s too big and it’s not really a utility vehicle.
In your situation, I’d probably either go with the CX-5 or something similar that does have a sufficient tow rating. There’s plenty of premium station wagons or SUVs that do...
You could probably just put a towbar on the F Type...

best answer here.

Every time someone says “Exocet” this is all I think of...
So what are you guys talking about??

Others have said this, but I’m gonna vote the same:
Spend the $80/yr for AAA Plus and get 100 miles of towing. It’s cheaper than the tax you’d have to pay on the new truck.
Alternatively, just buy a $1000 beater F150.

Logistically, if you break down in the 3 wheeler, you have to park it - grab a ride to your tow car, then go back for it. Is that better or worse than a tow truck? I don’t really have an answer there. It’s probably a wash in the time vs money debate.
For a long distance thing, I’m in a similar position with my Exocet. If I want to go to a track down in the LA area (instead of Laguna or Sonoma), I would probably have to trailer it. Heck, on a hot day, even Laguna would be tough (its a 2.5 hour drive each way ).
For the price of those trucks, you could have a really plush used crossover. Heck, I think the tow rating on the GLA45 AMG is 4400lbs. You could also go Macan S, XC90 AWD, F-Pace 35t, etc. You could also go used Stelvio - but then you’d need something to tow that when it breaks down towing the 3 w heeler.

I need to drive a Morgan some day. Once I get my Exocet finished (probably in the next couple of months), I’ll be looking for someone who wants to swap keys for a half hour on the PCH or through the redwoods. The word that comes to mind for the Morgan is “motoring” (as opposed to “driving”). That’s a really compelling thing.
Breaking down a lot, ehhhhhh. Take it or leave it. I don’t mind it being broken in the garage. Tinkering is fun.

The experience is visceral, it is rough and harsh, but you’re wrapped in leather. I really really enjoy it.

That’s what I love about the Exocet (minus the leather, though it’s kind of a blank canvas so that can be changed).
The 3 wheeler also checks a visual box - it’s a pretty little time capsule.

Most importantly, it is really really stupid to own as well because it isn’t good at anything.

Hahaha - that’s true. Most cars like that are at least good at track days.

The more I think about it, the more I’m like “Wow, a big truck is the perfect car. It can do anything!” A yellow Pro-4X Titan would be absolutely massive, but awesome. A lot of people are recommending AAA, but if trade-in is good enough, you could land in a Titan XD (new or slightly used) with a whole ton of equipment.

Reroute the central exhaust on the Jag. Install trailer hitch. You certainly have the torque for it.

In essence?
A naked Miata, that is, body panels and
all non-essential hardware removed.

Spoken like a true Jalop.

Gosh that is a hard decision. The part of me that love the Jag says “don’t ever do it!” But if you don’t love it anymore, then I guess it is time to say goodbye?

I have had 3 cars that appreciated after I sold them, a 2005 s2000 and 2009 Elise SC, and a 2006 Viper. Will this be the next one?

Probably, but more likely in a few more years since they are still being made.
